Don't look for Cameron Mason at the World Cup in Terralba this Sunday. The British champion is heading to Spain with his team for a training camp and will therefore skip the World Cup cyclocross on the Italian island of Sardinia.
However, it was not an easy decision, the season's revelation explained in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws. "Because I feel so good and many riders are dropping out, I still considered starting, but I want to stick to the original plan, considering the busy Christmas period," Mason, who rides cyclocross for Seven Racing, explained.
For the organizers of the Terralba race, it is a big loss, as Mason has been one of the standout riders in recent cyclocross weeks. The 25-year-old rider is notable not only for his mustache but especially for his strong performances on the course.
He was already runner-up in two X2O-cross races, on the slopes of the Koppenberg and the race in Hamme. Last Sunday, he earned his first World Cup podium (3rd) in Flamanville, France.
Mason is certainly not the only cyclocross top rider to skip the third World Cup round of the season. Only four riders from the current World Cup top ten will start on Sunday in Sardinia. Also absent are World Cup leader Thibau Nys, his teammate Lars van der Haar, European champion Toon Aerts, Jente Michels, and Emiel Verstrynge.
Belgians Laurens Sweeck, Joran Wyseure, Niels Vandeputte, Michael Vanthourenhout, and Dutch riders Joris Nieuwenhuis and Pim Ronhaar will be present.
