Fernando Gaviria appears set to continue his career with Caja Rural-Seguros RGA. Sports newspaper AS reports that the Colombian sprinter is currently in talks with the management of the Spanish team.
According to AS, the negotiations are now in the final stages. "Both parties intend to reach an agreement. There is a good understanding, and the transfer could be finalized this week pending the necessary signatures," the source stated.
The 31-year-old Gaviria has been riding for Movistar since 2023, but his results have been underwhelming in recent seasons. In his first year with the team, he still found success at the Vuelta a San Juan and the Tour de Romandie, but in 2024 he managed just one sprint victory at the Tour Colombia. This year, the former top sprinter did not achieve more than a few podium finishes.
Once a top sprinter
In his early professional years, Gaviria was among the world’s elite sprinters. Riding for Quick Step and UAE Emirates, he won five stages of the Giro d’Italia (as well as the points classification), two stages in the Tour de France, and Paris-Tours. His palmarès includes 52 professional victories.

Gaviria reportedly discussed his future with Movistar’s management and was eager to stay, but the telecom team is searching for a ‘younger sprinter for the future’ and therefore decided to part ways with the former top sprinter.
If the experienced Colombian indeed signs with Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Gaviria will next season race alongside the Spanish-Dutch rider Alex Molenaar. The 26-year-old all-rounder still has a contract with the team until the end of 2026.
