In October he announced his cycling retirement, but Geoffrey Bouchard has now reconsidered and has signed a one-season contract with TotalEnergies. "I quickly realized: this is an opportunity," said his new team in a press release.
Bouchard is a typical late bloomer. The Frenchman was only picked up by the AG2R team at the end of 2018, at the age of 26. The climber made a name for himself with several promising results, mainly on the French circuit, catching the attention of the renowned squad. After a trial period, his dream came true: he signed his first professional contract there.
Bouchard developed into a highly valued rider and distinguished himself several times as a natural attacker, especially in the Grand Tours. In the 2019 Vuelta a España, he emerged as one of the revelations, as after three weeks and countless breakaway attempts, he went home with the King of the Mountains jersey. It wasn’t a fluke, as two years later he did exactly the same, but then in the Giro d’Italia.

There were more sporting highlights over the years. In 2022, he secured his first and only professional win (subsidiary classifications do not officially count) at the Tour of the Alps, and two years ago Bouchard also stood on the overall podium (3rd) at the Tour of Oman, but in recent seasons he has also been held back by various physical setbacks. His career seemed to be ending on a down note, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Bouchard will continue to race professionally for at least one more season, but now riding for TotalEnergies. "I will remember this story for a long time," said the fresh signing. "I was touched by all the attention from TotalEnergies. I quickly saw it as a unique opportunity. After some very good conversations, I am sure I will feel at home there: the team races freely and offensively. I look forward to seeing everyone again during the training camp in December."
