In July 2018, Geraint Thomas – wearing the yellow jersey – won the queen stage of the Tour de France to Alpe d’Huez. Now he’s back on the iconic Tour climb, but not on his bike. The recently retired Welshman is on a ski holiday in the area.
“A fantastic first day on the slopes,” he writes on Instagram alongside a photo showing him standing on his skis. Now 39, Thomas has many great memories of Alpe d’Huez. In 2018, he defeated Tom Dumoulin there after an incredibly tough Tour stage that also included the climbs of Col de la Madeleine and Col de la Croix de Fer. It was the day that Steven Kruijswijk’s solo bid ended on Alpe d’Huez. The day before, Thomas had already won on La Rosière. He would ultimately carry the yellow jersey all the way to Paris.

Director of Racing
Thomas hung up his bike after the last season but remains active in cycling. He now works as the ‘Director of Racing’ at INEOS Grenadiers, the team he has ridden for since 2010. In this role, he will work closely with Sir Dave Brailsford (Sporting Director), Performance Director Scott Drawer, and other members of the management team. Thomas is expected to provide crucial input on race strategy, rider recruitment and development, and race preparation.
