Giro 2026: Filippo Zana's injury seems minor after crash in promising position

Filippo Zana was part of the decisive breakaway in the eleventh Giro stage to Chiavari, but a crash spoiled his chances. Fortunately for the Italian, it remains a sporting disappointment, as initial medical examinations have not revealed any serious injuries.

It was perhaps the most remarkable moment of the eleventh stage in the Giro d’Italia. About 40 kilometers from the finish, Lennert Van Eetvelt suddenly went down with several fellow escapees in a tricky corner. At high speed, on a descending section of the course. Van Eetvelt himself was the first to crash. In his fall, he took Christian Scaroni and Zana down with him.

However, the latter seems to have escaped unscathed. That was confirmed by Soudal Quick-Step, Zana’s team, in a press release on Wednesday evening. "After a crash during a descent in the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia, Filippo Zana underwent medical examinations and X-rays."

Further examinations
"Filippo was involved in an incident when the rider ahead of him (Scaroni, ed.) crashed during a descent, but he was able to continue to the finish in Chiavari, where he was taken to an X-ray unit at the finish. The examinations showed that Filippo did not suffer any fractures. He will now have a full night’s rest before being examined again."

So it’s still uncertain whether Zana will start today’s twelfth stage to Verbania, but the 27-year-old climber appears able to continue his campaign in his home tour. Unfortunately, this is not the case for Van Eetvelt. The Belgian broke his middle finger and must withdraw from the Giro d’Italia.
