Giro 2026: Giulio Ciccone almost secures the mountain jersey
Giulio Ciccone is, as long as he finishes the Giro d'Italia, the King of the Mountains of this Giro d'Italia. The Italian started the last mountain stage in the Giro with a 57-point lead over closest rival Jonas Vingegaard, who could only still win if he scored significantly more points than Ciccone on the penultimate climb of Piancavallo. That did not happen on Saturday.
On the final climb of Piancavallo, only 50 points are available, meaning the Italian can no longer be overtaken. Ciccone came up seventh on the penultimate climb of Piancavallo, gaining four points on Vingegaard—who, by the way, seemed perfectly fine with that.
Ciccone now has 277 King of the Mountains points in this Giro, 61 more than Vingegaard, who stands on 216 points. The final stage to Rome features no categorized climbs.
This is the third time in his career that Ciccone has won a mountains classification in a Grand Tour. He previously achieved this in the Giro d'Italia (2018) and the Tour de France (2023).
