Giro 2026: Jonas Vingegaard follows in the footsteps of seven cycling legends

Jonas Vingegaard still needs to safely reach the finish line in Rome, but the Dane will crown himself today as the overall winner of the 109th Giro d'Italia without any accidents. Vingegaard will then join an exclusive group of eight riders who have all won the three different Grand Tours.

Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali, Chris Froome, and soon also Jonas Vingegaard: these are the eight renowned names who have won the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España during their careers.

Anquetil was the first after his overall win at the 1963 Vuelta a España, Froome was the latest after his victory in the 2018 Giro d'Italia. However, Vingegaard will join this exclusive list on Sunday.

After overall wins in the Tour de France (2022 and 2023) and the Vuelta a España (2025), he immediately takes the Giro d'Italia on his debut. And with style, as the Visma | Lease a Bike rider also won five stages.

Vingegaard is moreover the first rider in the current era to complete the trilogy, even before his major rival Tadej Pogacar, who has yet to win his first Vuelta.
