Giro 2026: UAE Emirates delivers tough medical verdict for Vine and Soler
UAE Emirates XRG is in the thick of the action where the blows are felt. The team was the biggest victim of the massive crash during the finale of the second stage of the Giro d’Italia 2026. Jay Vine and Marc Soler were immediately taken to the hospital after the fall. Several serious injuries were diagnosed there.
Team doctor Adrian Rotunno has bad news about the fallen riders. "Jay Vine suffered a concussion and a broken elbow. Marc Soler has a pelvic fracture. At this moment, it seems that neither of them will require surgery."
For Vine, this is yet another time he is sidelined due to injury. The 30-year-old Australian has been involved in several severe crashes over the past years. Two years ago, in the horrific crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, he broke a neck vertebra and two thoracic vertebrae, leading to a very long rehabilitation. Also this year, he was out for a significant time after a crash at the Tour Down Under.
There is a third rider from UAE Emirates XRG who must leave the Giro d’Italia: Adam Yates is too battered to continue. The GC contender was also one of the victims of the massive crash. The Brit still managed to reach the finish, but did not start the next day due to concussion symptoms.
It is now a matter for UAE Emirates XRG to regroup and set new goals, although it remains uncertain what is still possible for the WorldTour team. Jhonatan Narváez and Antonio Morgado – two key assets – also went down.
