Giro 2026: Vingegaard takes pink as Arensman sees rivals closing in, here is the leaderboard
After the fourteenth stage to Pila, we have gained more insight into the standings among the GC contenders. Jonas Vingegaard took the pink jersey, Felix Gall clearly is the best of the rest, and Thymen Arensman is involved in an exciting battle for the final podium. Wielerflits takes a closer look at the current situation in the general classification.
1. Vingegaard takes the pink jersey
Jonas Vingegaard perfectly capped off Visma | Lease a Bike’s impressive teamwork on Saturday. The Danish top favorite notched his third stage win of this Giro, took the pink jersey from Alfonso Eulálio, and once again extended his lead over the competition. Only bad luck now seems capable of keeping him from the overall victory.
2. Gall looks like the best of the rest
Once again, it was Felix Gall who stayed closest to Vingegaard. The Austrian rode to a second place on another mountain stage and appears to be on excellent form for that same position in the overall standings. Only Eulálio stands in his way, but if the Decathlon CMA CGM leader keeps climbing like this, it’s only a matter of time before the Portuguese is overtaken.
3. Eulalio limits the damage once again
Still, Eulálio once again managed to limit the damage on Saturday. Only Vingegaard surpassed the Bahrain-Victorious surprise in the general classification. A strong final placing is therefore still within reach.
4. Battle for third place
Although Vingegaard’s name can almost be penciled in on the honours list, the fight for third place remains wide open. Arensman is in the best position (assuming the Dutchman overtakes Eulálio), but Giulio Pellizzari and Jai Hindley have closed the gap. The duo from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe are far from settled.
5. Piganzoli breaks into top 10
Tonight there will likely be champagne for the staff and riders of Visma | Lease a Bike because Vingegaard secured his third stage win and the pink jersey. However, Piganzoli might skip the bubbly. The Italian is doing excellent work for his Danish leader but secretly seems to dream of a strong final result himself. Thanks to another impressive climbing performance in Pila, he slips into the top 10. How high can the 23-year-old domestique finish?
