Guillermo Silva surprises with double victory in the Giro d'Italia 2026: "Historic for Uruguay!"
Guillermo Silva cannot contain his joy after his double success in the second stage of the Giro d'Italia 2026. The 24-year-old rider from XDS Astana became the first stage winner in the history of the Giro d'Italia to come from Uruguay. "This is really unexpected!" the young rider exclaims in the flash interview. He is also the new race leader.
The Uruguayan is ecstatic after his stage win during his first participation in the Giro d'Italia. "I knew my form was good, but of course it is extremely difficult to win a stage in a Grand Tour. I am overwhelmed with emotion. The final climb was very tough and the pace was high. Luckily, I still had Christian Scaroni with me. He was very active and helped me enormously towards the finish. I just had to stay calm."
He did so until two hundred meters before the finish line, then surprised everyone like a bolt from the blue. "This is a very important victory for me. Jonas Vingegaard was very strong and they came very close to taking the day's win. I just had to wait for Scaroni's help. He closed the gap and launched my sprint. This is truly amazing for me. Of course, I hoped for this, but that it would be possible... This is historic for Uruguay!"
