Harrie Lavreysen claimed the world title in the keirin during the night of Thursday at the Track Cycling World Championships in Chile. For the 28-year-old Lavreysen, this is already the eighteenth title of his career.
In the first round, things nearly went wrong for Lavreysen, but he still qualified for the quarterfinals and later the final through the repechages. The Brit Matthew Richardson, who had taken Lavreysen's world record earlier this season, and the Japanese defending champion Kento Yamasaki were already eliminated by then.
In the final itself, the lightning-fast Lavreysen launched an early attack. However, the Brabander's sprint was strong enough to maintain his position. His Dutch compatriot Jeffrey Hoogland took the bronze.
After the world title in the team sprint on Thursday, this is already the second time this week that Lavreysen has celebrated victory. And as it turns out, he is far from done celebrating. "Before this tournament, I secretly set a goal to go for four world titles, something no one has ever done. I wanted to wait to see how this event went before voicing that ambition, but now it’s certainly a very nice goal," he told NOS.
Can’t stop. Won’t stop. 😮💨
