While this week the 2025 European Road Cycling Championships are being held in the Ardèche, it is still unclear where the European Championships will take place in 2026. However, the Italian OA Sport reports that Slovenia has put itself forward as a candidate to host the European Championships. Will we see Tadej Pogačar fighting for the stars jersey on home soil next year?
The candidacy of Slovenia was announced by the president of the Slovenian Cycling Federation, Pavel Marđonovič. "The European Road Cycling Championships would be the biggest sporting event Slovenia has ever organized," he said. "Now it’s up to us to convince the UEC (the European Cycling Union) that we will be a reliable host, so that we can officially finalize the agreement and then start organizing a world-class event."
It is not yet known where in Slovenia the championships would take place. It is also unclear whether other countries have submitted bids. Should Slovenia indeed secure the European Championships, it would be the first time a major international cycling championship is held in the country. However, the Giro d'Italia has passed through Slovenia numerous times. The country is also aiming to host the start of the 2029 Tour de France.
