Jonas Vingegaard takes the lead in the general classification again after the tenth stage of the Vuelta a España. On the final climb to the Larra-Belagua ski resort, the Dane saw Torstein Træen drop off, which means he now holds the red leader's jersey once more.
Vingegaard kept a steady pace on the over nine-kilometer-long final climb but appeared to respond smoothly to attacks from his rival João Almeida. Almeida's teammate Jay Vine managed to stay away from the grip of the favorites in a large breakaway group and claimed his second stage win, but Vingegaard certainly did not come away empty-handed.
"I am very happy to wear the red jersey again," Vingegaard said afterward on the website of his team Visma | Lease a Bike. "Leading a classification always feels good. During the stage, I wasn’t really focused on the overall situation, but was mainly concentrated on the high pace in the group of favorites."
"Among others, Almeida was going hard, but I felt good again. Tomorrow (in the stage to Bilbao, ed.) I get to start in red again. It would be great if I could hold onto the jersey until the final stage in Madrid," he said, not planning to give up the red jersey for the rest of the Vuelta.
In the general classification, Vingegaard now has a 26-second lead over Træen, but notably 38 seconds over Almeida, his arguably biggest rival for the overall victory. Tom Pidcock, currently fourth in the standings, also remains within the minute (+58 seconds).
