Jonas Vingegaard praises Davide Piganzoli: "I didn’t even have to attack anymore"
Jonas Vingegaard won the fourteenth stage of the Giro d'Italia to Pila after an impressive performance by Visma | Lease a Bike. It often sounds cliché in post-race interviews, but this time Vingegaard truly won thanks to a strong team effort.
The Dane had instructed his teammates at Visma | Lease a Bike not to allow any strong breakaways to get away. Tim Rex took on the first part of the stage, followed by Bart Lemmen. On the final climb, Victor Campenaerts, Sepp Kuss, and Davide Piganzoli took over, before Vingegaard made his move 4.7 kilometers from the summit.
"This is the one I will remember the most," said the Dane. "We had a plan from the start with the team. We wanted to control the race, and that’s exactly what my teammates did. They did an amazing job all day. It was impressive to see."
Vingegaard’s attack was immediately decisive. "It’s always a bit of improvisation when you make your move. We wanted to try when it got steeper. I hardly even had to attack anymore, Piganzoli had already dropped everyone," the Dane praised.
As the icing on the cake, Vingegaard also takes the leader’s jersey from Afonso Eulalio. "It’s very nice to wear the pink jersey tomorrow in Milan. It’s a very beautiful and special city, so I’m really looking forward to it."
