Jonas Vingegaard races without a mustache again: "I looked like a teenager"

Jonas Vingegaard had been sporting a mustache in recent weeks, but today we suddenly saw a freshly shaven Vingegaard at the start of the seventeenth stage of the Giro d'Italia. What prompted this change?

"Yesterday I looked in the mirror and realized I looked like a teenager trying to grow a mustache," he said before the stage to Eurosport. "It just had to go. About that mustache: sometimes you have to accept defeat. That's just how life is. I have to accept it," he responded with his characteristic dry humor.

Vingegaard was brief about today's stage. "It’s not really a stage for our team. It’s mostly about controlling the race. It’s a tricky stage. It’s tougher than you might initially think."

The Visma | Lease a Bike rider also wore a mustache during the first part of last year’s Vuelta a España. However, before the twelfth stage, he appeared in the mixed zone clean-shaven. What had happened? At the request of his wife Trine Hansen, Vingegaard shaved it off.

“I usually say I don’t care what others think, but there is one person I do care about. She didn’t like it (the mustache, ed.). So I had to shave it off,” Vingegaard explained at the time to TNT Sports.
