Jonas Vingegaard Withdraws from UAE Tour Due to Injury and Illness
Jonas Vingegaard will not start in the UAE Tour (February 16-22). The Dane from Visma | Lease a Bike is still experiencing significant effects from his crash during training last month and has also fallen ill. This was announced by his team.
Vingegaard is disappointed that he cannot participate in the WorldTour stage race. "I was really looking forward to returning here and am disappointed that we had to make this decision. However, the combination of my crash and the subsequent illness left us no other choice. It’s better to fully recover first, so I can focus on my upcoming goals," said the two-time Tour winner.
Last week, Vingegaard crashed during a descent in training. The crash caused quite a stir, as Vingegaard and his team claimed it was partly caused by an amateur who was closely following his wheel. The damage initially seemed minor but combined with illness, it now prevents him from starting what was supposed to be his first race of the season.
Vingegaard’s next race is now the Volta a Catalunya (March 23-29), after which he is expected to prepare for the Giro d’Italia.
This is not the first time a crash has disrupted Vingegaard’s preparations. In 2024, his buildup to the Tour de France was seriously hindered by a heavy crash in the Basque Country Tour. Last year, he suffered a concussion after a fall in Paris-Nice, which also forced him to revise his season schedule.
