The flirtation between Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe and Remco Evenepoel has been ongoing for several years, but a concrete deal never materialized. According to the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta, there has now been progress in the matter, despite Evenepoel’s current contract with Soudal Quick-Step.
Cyclingflash.com has meanwhile learned from multiple sources that the signing of Evenepoel will be announced by the German team in the first week of August.
"Last Monday, Remco Evenepoel and Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe reached an agreement," writes Gazzetta journalist Ciro Scognamiglio. "It is a multi-year contract starting in 2026 and running at least until 2028. The 'deal' can be considered done."
This would put an end to the rumors that have been circulating for some time. Earlier in July, those reports flared up again when serious talks between both parties came to light. According to UCI regulations, Soudal Quick-Step must also agree for the transfer to become official.
"To leave or stay, honestly: I don’t know," former team boss Patrick Lefevere wrote in his column at the time. "I only know the context: BORA manager Ralph Denk has been courting Remco for four years. He made him a first offer back then that still hurts my eyes. Since then, it hasn’t stopped."
"Maybe they’re now really making Remco an offer he can’t refuse, but that doesn’t mean Jurgen Foré and Zdeněk Bakala (respectively CEO and owner of the Soudal Quick-Step team, ed.) have to go along with it. Remco has a contract until the end of 2026. Maybe all parties will soon reach an agreement, maybe we’re heading for a legal battle before the labor court. Or maybe it’s a storm in a teacup and Remco will simply stay where he is," Lefevere concluded.
