Lorena Wiebes has become world champion for the second time in the scratch race at the Track Cycling World Championships in Chile. At the Velódromo Peñalolén, she settled the score with the Dane Amalie Dideriksen after a thrilling final, successfully defending her title.
On the first day of the 2025 Track Cycling World Championships in Santiago, Chile, one of the highlights was the battle for the scratch race title. Before the start, most eyes were on Wiebes, who as the defending champion was seen as the clear favorite for the rainbow jersey.
Lithuanian surprise attack
Initially, the Dutch rider appeared to dominate the race, but in the final phase, the 26-year-old was briefly caught off guard by a surprise attack from Olivija Baleistyte. The Lithuanian decided to lay her cards on the table early, and the other participants then looked to Wiebes, who as the top favorite was expected to chase down the move.
However, Wiebes was not tempted to take the initiative and even noticeably lowered the pace. Baleistyte fully capitalized on this and managed to increase her lead. This created a very dangerous situation for Wiebes, but she seemed calm and only started to show signs of life again in the final two laps.

With an ultimate jump
This proved to be (just) in time, as the exhausted Baleistyte was caught again, but this was the moment for Amalie Dideriksen to launch her sprint. Wiebes was briefly surprised, had to chase, and managed to overtake the Dane only in the very last corner. With a final powerful effort, she succeeded in prolonging her world title.
