Lotto-Intermarché also fears for Milan Menten: "Had to vomit twice"
Does Lotto-Intermarché have to fear a second dropout after Arnaud De Lie's withdrawal? Milan Menten is still struggling with his health and already flirted with quitting during Tuesday's fourth stage. "Tonight, we will have to assess whether it is wise to keep him in the Giro," said team director Pieter Vanspeybrouck in an interview with Sporza.
Lennert Van Eetvelt is a bright spot, but otherwise, Lotto-Intermarché has not had much luck in the Giro d'Italia. The Belgian team suffered a setback today with the withdrawal of their sprint leader Arnaud De Lie. The Belgian had been ill in the week leading up to the Giro, and there was absolutely no sign of improvement in recent days.
"We had hoped Arnaud would feel better after the rest day, but today he again suffered from stomach issues," explained team director Vanspeybrouck. "The most important thing now is for him to recover fully. We are not panicking yet about his upcoming targets: the Tour of Wallonia and the Tour de France."
"The rider had to vomit twice"
The team has another concern, as Milan Menten, who is also ill, is currently struggling. "Today it was also touch and go for Milan. Because I heard that during the stage he had to vomit twice. Tonight we need to consider whether it is wise to keep Milan in the Giro."
Despite all the problems, Menten managed to finish the stage. The sprinter crossed the line in Cosenza in 173rd place, second to last, more than eighteen minutes behind stage winner Jhonatan Narváez.
