Milan-San Remo may change route after landslides
Does the route of Milan-San Remo (March 21) need to be adjusted out of necessity? Bicisport suggests this might be the case. Due to landslides, part of the course could still be impassable in March.
On Sunday evening, a section of the highway between Aurelia and Arenzano was blocked due to a large landslide. Local media reported that over 2,000 cubic meters of rock debris had rolled down. The landslide occurred near the Pizzo tunnel.
The mayor of Arenzano told GenovaToday that one-way traffic could resume within four or five days, but it may take significantly longer before everything is back to normal.
"According to an initial estimate, it could take four or five days to remove all the debris on the road—weather permitting," he said. "After that, we need to assess what is necessary to fully clear everything."
Plan B?
They are considering a scenario where it could take several months before the highway is fully reopened. If that is the case, the Milan-San Remo organizers will have to plot an alternative route, since this section is part of the Italian classic’s course.
