After his victory in the opening round in Tábor, David Haverdings was unable to claim the second U23 World Cup cyclocross win. The Dutch rider had a good start in the French Flamanville race but faded afterward, crossing the line in ninth place. The win went to home favorite Aubin Sparfel.
Following the junior races (victories for Filippo Grigolini and Lise Revol), it was the turn of the men's U23 category. Before the start, most eyes were on David Haverdings, the World Cup leader, and local rider Aubin Sparfel. The latter was loudly cheered on by many French cyclocross fans and had an excellent start.
The very versatile Sparfel—whose team Decathlon CMA CGM also predicts a great career for him as a road cyclist—set the pace and created the first selection. Haverdings initially put up a strong fight, but this time he didn’t have his Tábor legs and clearly had to acknowledge the superiority of the Frenchman.
However, the road was not clear for Sparfel yet, as he was fiercely challenged by Yordi Corsus. The Belgian stayed close to his French rival for a long time but lacked the legs to keep Sparfel from taking the win.

New World Cup Leader
The Frenchman crossed the line first by a large margin in his home race—ahead of Corsus and Italian Stefano Viezzi—killing two birds with one stone: he also took over the lead in the World Cup from Haverdings. The Dutch rider was limited to ninth place in Flamanville.
