Oier Lazkano – who is currently provisionally suspended by the UCI due to abnormal values in his biological passport – has spoken out for the first time. The Spaniard firmly denies in a statement that he has used prohibited substances. "I will do everything possible to prove my innocence," he says.
It is certainly a topic of discussion in Spain: the doping case surrounding Oier Lazkano. The Basque rider was provisionally suspended earlier this week by the UCI due to suspicious fluctuations in his biological passport between 2022 and 2024. During that period, the 25-year-old Spaniard rode for Movistar. Last road season he competed for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe.
Lazkano – who faces a possible four-year ban – is no longer under contract with Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. In a press release, the German WorldTeam announced that their paths with the classics specialist will part. However, Lazkano maintains he is innocent and wants to clear his name.
“I have always followed the rules”
"I want to make absolutely clear that I have never used doping or prohibited substances," he begins in his official statement. "I have always followed the rules, as well as the values important in cycling. Through daily efforts and training, dedication, and honesty, I have been able to build and develop my career."

"I am a person of integrity and an honest athlete," states the former Spanish champion, who further emphasizes that he will do everything necessary to prove his innocence: "I will defend my reputation and do whatever it takes to demonstrate my innocence. I will also prove that I have never been involved in any illegal conduct."
A medico-legal team is assisting Lazkano in his effort to clear his name. "So all the necessary measures can be taken with the aim to prove my integrity. I trust in the truth and in sporting justice. I want to thank everyone for their support. I am determined to clear my name."
