It’s no surprise, but Pierre Latour has truly made his decision: the 32-year-old Frenchman is hanging up his bike for good. His cycling career ends on a low note, as he couldn’t have a proper farewell in competition due to a training accident.
Two weeks ago, Latour was hit by a van in the municipality of Peyrins, located in the French department of Drôme. This incident already put his participation in the Chrono des Nations at risk. The Frenchman hoped to get ready in time for this time trial event to say goodbye as a professional on the bike, but unfortunately, that wasn’t meant to be.
The rider quietly exits the cycling peloton through the back door, after a career during which he became one of the favorites of the French public. Thanks to his attacking style, he not only won the hearts of French cycling fans but also claimed some notable victories.
His biggest win was probably in 2016: that year he took the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a España, finishing atop the Alto de Aitana. Latour also became French national time trial champion twice. This year, he was still successful in the Tour du Rwanda.

New French hope for grand tours
Because of his climbing and time trial abilities, Latour was once seen as the new French hope for Grand Tours, but that proved to be too ambitious. Still, he made a name for himself in stage races, finishing thirteenth overall in the 2018 Tour de France and, above all, winning the white young rider jersey. However, he was never able to fulfill the high expectations that followed.
