'RCS plans women's edition of the Giro di Lombardia in 2027'
This year marks the 120th edition of the men's Giro di Lombardia, but women are still waiting for their own version of the Italian climbing classic. However, this won’t take much longer, reports Het Laatste Nieuws. There are reportedly plans for a first women’s edition.
The Italian autumn classic is currently the only monument that does not yet have a women's race. The Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège for women have existed for quite some time, while Paris-Roubaix added a women's race in 2021. Milan-San Remo followed in 2025.
Giro di Lombardia is still lagging behind for now, but HLN has learned that the Italian organizer RCS now wants to stage a women’s race as well. There are reportedly concrete plans to hold the first Giro di Lombardia for women in 2027.
One of the prominent figures in women’s cycling, Demi Vollering, recently made an appeal to the UCI. After a training ride near Lake Como — where the Giro di Lombardia finale takes place — she addressed UCI president David Lappartient.
"Now I really want there to be a Giro di Lombardia for women," she wrote on Instagram. "Consider this my first note to your letter this week." Vollering climbed, among others, the Madonna Del Ghisallo and the Muro di Sormano, two famous steep climbs in the ‘Race of the Falling Leaves’.
