After a season that was at times difficult due to a training accident in the winter, Remco Evenepoel is determined to make the most of his autumn. Sunday marks his first historic moment, as the World Time Trial Championships are on the agenda. Following a flawless preparation, Evenepoel is bursting with confidence.
The 25-year-old Belgian flies to Rwanda today, where this year’s world championships will take place, but first spoke to VRT NWS/Sporza at Zaventem airport. How is Evenepoel feeling, just four days before the global race against the clock? "I was able to do everything perfectly that was needed (in Calpe, ed.). It was a ten-day relaxed training period. I trained well and came away with a good feeling. I'm ready to go."
Evenepoel is preparing for a very special world championship, as it’s the first time an African country will host the global event. "It’s going to be a unique experience," he’s enthusiastic.
"I’m very curious to see what it will be like with the crowd and the course." I’m quite an open-minded person, so I’m not stressed about it. I’ve been to Africa before, in Morocco. Though that is obviously a different region. I love discovering new places, so that’s a nice bonus."
"Pogacar is an extra special challenger"
But for Evenepoel, Rwanda is about one thing only: performing. He hopes to succeed himself as world champion in the time trial, but will have to contend with a certain Tadej Pogacar. "If he sets his mind on something, it’s a sign that he feels ready for it," says the defending champion cautiously.
"I’m looking forward to the battle. Hopefully, it won’t be a close battle, but he is a great additional challenger. Of course, there are other strong riders as well. Jay Vine is in good form, for example. But it’s up to me to defend my rainbow jersey."
