Remco Evenepoel Is Unbeatable Again, This Time in Trofeo Andratx-Pollenca
Remco Evenepoel has won again at Challenge Mallorca. On Saturday, the Belgian was the best in the Trofeo Andratx-Pollenca. This marks his third victory of the season. Maxim Van Gils finished a strong third, trailing closely behind Evenepoel.
All eyes in Mallorca were once again on Evenepoel on Saturday, who, just a day earlier, had left everyone behind in the Trofeo Serra Tramuntana. Nearly everyone expected the Belgian rider to repeat his performance from the day before in Mallorca, especially since the Trofeo Andratx-Pollenca course was even tougher with the long climb of the Coll de Puig Major halfway through.
Until this climb, a breakaway led by Jonathan Caicedo, Felix Engelhard, Alexys Brunel, Adne Holter, and Raúl García Pierna was ahead, but given the climbing prowess present at the start on the Spanish island, they were no real threat for the victory on Saturday.
On the ascent of Puig Major, Evenepoel stirred things up. The Belgian thinned out the peloton nicely, remaining with riders like Diego Pescador, Mathys Rondel, Iván Romeo, Antonio Morgado, Christian Scaroni, and the strong Maxim Van Gils, who also impressed on Saturday.
Evenepoel breaks away again after the climb and wins (again)
That group regrouped at the summit. Missed opportunity for Evenepoel to create a decisive gap? Not at all, because, once again, the Belgian attacked on the plateau afterwards. With 35 kilometers to go, he rode away together with Rondel from the favourites, and the race seemed to slow down.
In the finale, Evenepoel only needed to shake off Rondel. He managed this on the final climb and then soloed again to victory. The Belgian now has three wins in three races this season. Teammate Van Gils secured third place.
