Riding cyclocross Sunday, Mathieu van der Poel is already back on skis
In less than 24 hours from the mud in Hulst to the snow of Livigno: in the world of Mathieu van der Poel, anything is possible. The Dutchman is currently enjoying a short ski vacation after claiming his eighth elite world cyclocross title. On Instagram, we see Van der Poel gliding down the slopes like an experienced skier.
That Van der Poel is a skiing enthusiast is no secret. The Alpecin-Premier Tech rider has been skiing since his childhood and is clearly very skilled. Last year, he was also on a ski vacation in Livigno, where he practiced a remarkable variant of skiing.
Van der Poel tried heliskiing, a form of skiing where skiers are brought to the top of a mountain by helicopter. After being dropped off at the summit, the skiers can ski down unique trails.
After securing his eighth cyclocross world title in Hulst, Van der Poel can now take a well-deserved break. He will spend the next few days in the snow of Livigno before starting preparations for his road season in Spain.
Earlier, Van der Poel hinted that the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on February 28 might be an option. It would mark his debut in the Flemish opening classic. "But I will only decide about that the week before. If I feel good enough during my training, I will definitely take part," he said yesterday after winning his eighth cyclocross title.
