Sarah Gigante was one of the standout performers at the Tour de France Femmes. The Australian rider from AG Insurance-Soudal stood out with her cheerful, honest interviews and racing style. On the longer climbs, she was, apart from Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, the strongest rider in the peloton, while she was one of the weakest when descending. This ultimately cost her a podium spot.
After the finish, Gigante was in shock for several minutes. The Australian rider stared blankly ahead for several minutes as tears streamed down her face. The journalists gathered around Gigante watched silently and with goosebumps. A few even — quite remarkably — were moved to tears themselves and cried along with her.
About ten minutes later, when her tears had mostly dried up, Gigante was ready to speak to the press. "It was a super tough and lonely day," she said. "My legs hurt a lot. Even though I wanted a better place in the final classification, I have to look back on this race with satisfaction. Of course, I am disappointed to miss the podium, that was my goal as well. But I did everything I could."
