Architect of Jonas Vingegaard’s striking shorts turns out to be Victor Campenaerts
Sporza commentator Renaat Schotte dubbed Jonas Vingegaard’s clothing choice at Paris-Nice as 'the most peculiar cycling shorts of all time.' The Danish winner’s 'double' cycling shorts stood out, and now we also know the story.
On the footage, it wasn’t entirely clear what wardrobe choices the Dane had made, but in the cold and rainy conditions, Vingegaard was well bundled up. After putting on his rain jacket, it looked like he was riding with two pairs of cycling shorts layered over each other. The outer shorts even partially covered his racing jersey.
From Victor Campenaerts’ entourage, Sporza learned that Campenaerts himself had sewn the chamois pad out of Vingegaard’s long cycling shorts before the start of the stage, so he could wear them over his other shorts.
The unusual and striking outfit sparked a lot of comments on social media, but Vingegaard was able to laugh about it afterward. "There was no time to take the shorts off. Maybe I’m setting a new trend now," he said in the flash interview.
I'm not sure I can continue watching this sport if Vingegaard wins with bib tights over his jersey.
And yes, I know, I won't be missed.
