Striking footage from Tour Down Under: kangaroo causes GC leader Jay Vine to crash
Remarkable footage from the final stage of the Tour Down Under. A kangaroo ran onto the road, causing a crash in the peloton with just under 100 kilometers to go.
Because of the marsupial's actions, several riders went down, including GC leader Jay Vine of UAE Emirates-XRG and Dutchman Menno Huising of Visma | Lease a Bike. Vine was able to continue and later secured the overall victory. Huising, Alberto Dainese (Soudal Quick-Step), and Lucas Stevenson (Australian national team) had to abandon the race.
The footage shows how these riders fell because of the kangaroo. The animal then made its way through the stopped peloton back into nature. Vine quickly got back on his bike, but other riders were clearly more seriously affected.
The final stage took place on a local circuit in Stirling and was won by Matthew Brennan of Visma | Lease a Bike.
