Tadej Pogacar looks ahead on his own gravel section to Strade Bianche: "Paul Seixas looks strong"
Anyone who wins Strade Bianche three times gets a gravel sector named after them in the Italian one-day race. With his victory last year, Tadej Pogacar secured his own sector. Today, two days before he aims for his fourth win, he was present at the notable Colle Pinzuto to unveil the commemorative stone. Pogi also briefly looked ahead to Saturday’s race there.
"I love this race, and now I am part of its history. That makes me honored and humble," Pogacar said during a brief ceremony to outlets including Sporza.
Fabian Cancellara
The Slovenian is the second rider to have a sector named after him in Strade Bianche. The Monte Sante Marie has carried the name of Fabian Cancellara for years, a winner in 2008, 2012, and 2016. "I feel a bit starstruck next to Fabian. As a kid, I looked up to him. It was amazing to watch him race on these roads. As a teenager, I never would have dreamed of this."
Having his own sector now in Strade Bianche, complete with a commemorative stone, is special to Pogacar. "I hope this stone stays here," he laughed. "Hopefully no one steals it or nature won't erase it. No, seriously: this means something. It’s different from a trophy you get on the podium. Anyone passing by or watching can see this."
Paul Seixas
The reigning world champion also briefly previewed Saturday, as he goes for his fourth Strade Bianche victory. "I’m really looking forward to it. I worked hard this winter to start the season strong. I’ve had a great period with many training blocks, both at home and on training camps. I’m eager to race, but the time has flown by."
Pogi was also asked if anyone could follow him on Saturday. Paul Seixas, for example. "I hope no one will ride ahead of me on this sector. But someone like Paul Seixas looks strong, yes."
