End of spring? Michael Matthews breaks both wrists during training
Michael Matthews will not be competing for the time being. The 35-year-old Australian broke both wrists in a crash during training on Thursday. This was announced by his team Jayco AlUla via social media.
After his fall, Matthews was taken to the hospital, where a CT scan revealed that he had broken both wrists. "As a result, he is out of action for the upcoming races," Jayco AlUla wrote.
In January, Matthews already won the Gran Premio Castellón; he did not race in February. The next race he was scheduled to ride was Paris-Nice, starting this Sunday. His spring campaign also included Milan-San Remo, the E3 Saxo Classic, In Flanders Fields (Gent-Wevelgem), the Tour of Flanders, the Amstel Gold Race, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Eschborn-Frankfurt.
At least through the classics up to and including the Tour of Flanders, Matthews now seems forced to sit out. The hill classics that follow will likely be tight for him as well.
