UCI intensifies safety inspections on wheels, tires, and barriers
Safety: in recent years, it has certainly become a very important topic within the cycling world. Behind the scenes, the UCI is actively working on crystallizing various safety measures. For example, the cycling union plans to intensify safety studies on wheels, tires, and barriers.
This initiative fits within broader efforts to structurally improve safety in cycling. "Thanks to several projects, we have managed to reach important milestones," reads a press release following a UCI meeting in Beveren, Belgium.
"With the financial approval of the safety organization SafeR, the study into barriers is entering its final phase. Furthermore, a study into the detachment of wheels and tires—and more generally the properties of wheels used in cycling—is starting in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano in Italy."
Standards
"Another study focused on collision dynamics and aerodynamics is enabling the start of a project aimed at proposing solutions to improve cyclist safety through various numerical simulations," it continues.
"These research projects allow the UCI to lay the groundwork for discussions with relevant industry stakeholders and, where necessary, to consider establishing or revising standards to enhance the safety of cycling events."
