Unibet Rose Rockets announced the arrival of Victor Lafay. The 29-year-old Frenchman had considered quitting, but was convinced by Bas Tietema’s team to sign with them.
Lafay achieved the biggest victory of his career at the 2023 Tour de France by winning the second stage in San Sebastian ahead of an emerging Wout van Aert. After that, things went downhill for the Frenchman, partly due to a serious knee injury. Lafay thought about quitting cycling but has decided to continue.
In the announcement video, Lafay is asked why he wanted to stop cycling. "In the WorldTour you have to fit in a box and I don’t think I fit completely. I wanted to sell cheese in Japan, have a food truck, and make croque monsieurs."
"Then Bas called me. He asked, can I come to Annecy? We were supposed to ride for an hour, but it ended up being four. I had offers from WorldTeams, but I knew I wouldn’t be happy there. With the Rockets, I feel much more at home," he concludes.
