Vingegaard felt unsafe in Milan: "But the positive is that the jury listened to us"

Jonas Vingegaard acted today as the patron of the Giro peloton. The pink jersey holder complained about the final circuit in Milan, after which the race director decided to stop the time for the general classification upon entering the final lap. After the race, Vingegaard shared his story with Cycling Pro Net.

"I think I spent more time next to the red jury car than with my own follow car," laughed the Danish team leader of Visma | Lease a Bike, who indeed was seen riding alongside the jury car for a while. "We riders all thought this might not be the safest course to race on. That’s why there was a lot of discussion within the peloton, and I spoke with many riders."

"We agreed that something had to be done. So I went to the red car and today they really listened to us. They also accommodated us. I think as riders, we should thank the jury for that.”

Poor roads
The roads in Milan were 'generally not of the best quality,' Vingegaard said. "There were a lot of potholes and all kinds of bumps and manhole covers. There was almost no moment when I felt safe enough to grab my bottle or eat something. And then there were also those… What do you call them…? Tram tracks.”

"There were many of them, and it was very bumpy to ride over. Overall, the peloton felt the organization could have been better. But the positive thing is that today they really listened to us.”

Final week
So Vingegaard was able to take the final lap at his 'own pace.' But the Dane expects a tough final week in this Giro. Although his lead is comfortable, he is not yet thinking about the overall victory. "Of course, it’s a very nice lead I have now, and I’m very happy with that. But there are still many stages to come. The third week is the hardest one here. So, you can really only say you’ve won once you arrive in Rome.”
