Expectations around Oier Lazkano were high. The Spaniard was supposed to be one of the key signings to take Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe’s classics squad to the next level, but the results were frankly disappointing, and Lazkano hasn’t raced at all since Paris-Roubaix.
128th, DNF, 112th, DNF, DNF, 108th, and 117th: Oier Lazkano’s results in the recent spring classics were – to put it mildly – underwhelming. The former Spanish champion was one of the standout riders last spring, but the 25-year-old rider has so far struggled to make an impact with his new team, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe.
What’s going on with Lazkano? In March, the rider said illness had prevented him from reaching his usual level, but he hoped to reignite his season with a training camp on the famous Teide volcano. However, his season was cut short in April and Lazkano hasn’t ridden for his new team since his appearance at Paris-Roubaix.
This prompted Spanish sports newspaper Marca to ask team director Patxi Vila about the unusually long absence of his compatriot, but the former rider declined to comment due to 'team guidelines.' Lazkano himself has deleted his social media profiles and has kept his X account private, according to Ciclo21.
"His prolonged absence is causing concern in the peloton. A young rider with proven talent in the classics, who seemed destined to become a top contender, has come to a halt. For now, there is no certainty about his immediate future," writes the Spanish cycling site.
