The stage was cancelled after the Basque separatist movement ETA planted a bomb on the course. The explosive detonated on the slopes of the Col de Urbasa. The blast gouged a crater into the road shortly before the riders passed through. Due to the unsafe situation and the resulting delay, the organizers decided to permanently scrap the stage.
