Biniam Girmay claims first win since 2024: "This is why I joined NSN"
Biniam Girmay had a tough year in 2025, but this season he has started excellently. In his debut for NSN Cycling, he immediately won the opening stage of the Tour of Valencia. That meant a lot to the 25-year-old Eritrean.
"It had been over a year since I last won," said Girmay, whose last victory was at the 2024 Tour de France. "Last year I struggled. I often finished second, but that wasn't enough. I am now super happy and very motivated for 2026. I'm glad to be back, that I have regained momentum and confidence."
"I also have the yellow jersey now. If I recall correctly, this is only the second time I’ve worn a leader’s jersey. I’m really happy about that too. It’s great to be back in the Tour of Valencia."
'This is why I joined this team'
On the only categorized climb of the day, the pace was high, significantly thinning out the peloton. NSN Cycling hadn’t expected this immediately. "We did not anticipate that move. They surprised us, but we were in a good position as a team. We had someone up front to control things," said Girmay, who thanked his teammates emphatically.
"This is why I joined this team. We have strong riders and a great atmosphere. Everyone is super motivated. Everyone did their job one hundred percent up to the last kilometer. This victory is for my team-mates. We’ll keep pushing on."
