Colombian rider from Polti VisitMalta provisionally suspended after positive doping test

Germán Darío Gómez is currently suspended. The 24-year-old Colombian from Polti VisitMalta, who many will remember from the 2019 Junior World Championships, tested positive for the banned substance Boldenone in an out-of-competition test. He still has the right to request a B sample analysis. This was announced by the UCI in a press release.

Darío Gómez tested positive in a doping control on December 28, 2025. Boldenone and a metabolite of this substance were detected. Boldenone is an anabolic-androgenic steroid originally developed for animals, especially horses, to promote muscle growth and appetite. It can lead to faster recovery, increased muscle mass, and a higher production of red blood cells. For these reasons, it is on the doping list.

Darío Gómez has been a pro since 2024, when he signed with the then Polti Kometa. A year earlier, he finished fourth in the Giro Next Gen, the Giro d'Italia for U23 riders. His best result as a professional came last year at the Tour of Turkey, where he finished sixth in the stage race won by Wout Poels.

Tears at the World Championships in Harrogate
Long before Darío Gómez became a pro, he was already in the spotlight. In 2019, as a junior at the World Championships in Harrogate, he suffered mechanical problems and was seen crying on the roadside. Last year, he reflected on that moment for our camera.
