Gregor Mühlberger is leaving Movistar after five years. The 31-year-old Austrian is moving to Decathlon CMA CGM, the successor of Decathlon AG2R. He has signed a one-year contract with the French team.
"I am incredibly excited to join one of the best teams in the world," says Mühlberger on his new team's website. "I believe in the direction this team is heading and in the professionalism of the squad. That motivates me even more to push myself to new heights. I can’t wait to prove my qualities as a reliable domestique, especially in tough mountain terrain, and to support GC contenders like Paul Seixas and my Austrian teammate Felix Gall."
Sébastien Joly, team manager at Decathlon AG2R, views the Austrian as a "valuable reinforcement" for the team. "Gregor Mühlberger has ridden for major teams for several years," the Frenchman explains. "He is a strong climber who can support our leaders in the toughest mountain stages. His presence should allow us to strengthen our squad in high mountains and better support our leaders, particularly Felix Gall, in the big races."
Pro for Ten Years
Mühlberger turned professional in 2016 with BORA-Argon 18, later known as BORA-hansgrohe. He stayed with the German team through 2020 before transferring to Movistar. He then rode five years for the Spanish outfit.
In his now ten years as a pro, Mühlberger has recorded nine victories. His latest wins came in 2023, when he took a stage in the Tour of the Alps, the Austrian national road championship, and a stage in the Deutschland Tour. His biggest victory remains a stage win at the BinckBank Tour in 2018. Additionally, Mühlberger has competed in eleven Grand Tours: once in the Giro d’Italia, three times in the Vuelta a España, and seven times in the Tour de France. His best overall result in a Grand Tour was eighteenth place in last year’s Tour de France.
