The damage to Filippo Baroncini after his crash in the Tour of Poland is so severe that he is being kept in an induced coma. It must be immediately noted that his condition is stable, says team manager Mauro Gianetti of UAE Emirates XRG to Tuttobiciweb. Especially due to the facial fractures, it was decided to keep Baroncini in an induced coma.
Baroncini sustained multiple injuries in the crash during the third stage of the Tour of Poland, with the finish in Walbrzych. The Italian hit a wall in the crash. His broken clavicle was immediately operated on at the hospital, but he also suffered several facial fractures and a broken cervical vertebra, fortunately without impact on the nervous system.
"He did not suffer damage to vital organs in the crash; Filippo's life is not in danger," said the doctors at the Walbrzych hospital. On Friday, Mauro Gianetti arrived in Poland to be with the team and Baroncini. "Our rider is in an induced coma. The doctors have put him into deep sedation (to lower consciousness, editor’s note), and his condition is stable," he tells Tuttobiciweb.
Among other injuries, Baroncini’s cheekbone is broken, requiring immobilization according to the doctors. This is partly why the induced coma was chosen. The plan is to operate on Baroncini’s injuries next week in Italy. "Filippo will arrive in Italy by Tuesday evening at the latest. Milan is the most likely location," he adds.
