Joseph ‘Joe’ S. Montgomery, the founder of the well-known American bike brand Cannondale, passed away last Friday at the age of 86. This was confirmed by the family.
The American founded the bike brand in 1971 in Wilton, Connecticut. It started as a company producing cycling and camping accessories, but over the following decades grew into a leading company in the cycling industry.
Connection with EF
Cannondale eventually made its entry into the pro peloton. As the bike supplier for the current EF Education-EasyPost team, it established its name. Cannondale is not only a bike manufacturer: between 2015 and 2018, it was also the title sponsor of the American cycling team managed by Jonathan Vaughters.
In recent years, Cannondale was also the bike partner of Bas Tietema’s Unibet team (which has since switched to bikes from the German brand ROSE Bikes) and the men’s and women’s squads of St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93.
Scott Montgomery served as co-president and vice president of Cannondale from 1984 to 2003 and also played an important role in establishing Cannondale Japan and Cannondale Europe.
