Giro 2026: Bahrain Victorious targets top-5 with Santiago Buitrago

Bahrain Victorious is ready for the upcoming Giro d'Italia (May 8-31). The team is putting Santiago Buitrago forward as their GC contender, but they have "various options for different terrains," according to a press release. Alec Segaert and Mathijs Paasschens will provide the Belgian and Dutch contributions.

"Bahrain Victorious is going to the Giro d'Italia with Santiago Buitrago as leader. He will be fighting for the general classification in the coming weeks," it reads. "He is supported by a balanced squad that combines experience, climbing ability, and opportunities for stage wins."

Team leader Buitrago is ready to play a leading role in the upcoming Giro d'Italia. "Since last year, the Giro has been one of my main goals. It is a race with a special significance. It is one of my favorite races, and I have great memories," he refers to his two previous stage victories. "I feel ready for this challenge."

Mix of young and experienced riders
"We are bringing a strong and balanced team to the start. There is a good mix of young riders and experienced racers. It is very important to have someone like Damiano Caruso next to me. His experience in these kinds of races is invaluable. I know I can count on him for the next three weeks."

The now 38-year-old Caruso finished fifth in "his" Giro last year but will now mainly focus on supporting teammate Buitrago. The retiring Italian also hopes to win a stage in his final Giro. Afonso Eulálio and Edoardo Zambanini also have important roles in the climbing train around Buitrago.

Robert Stannard has been called up as a replacement for Matevz Govekar. The fast Slovenian was actually supposed to handle the sprint duties, but a "minor injury" threw a wrench in those plans. The selection is completed by Fran Miholjević, the Belgian rouleur Alec Segaert (who will also get his chances in the transitional stages), and the Dutch domestique Mathijs Paasschens.

Ambitious goal
Team director Franco Pellizotti looks ahead to the Giro with confidence. "We have a very strong squad. With Santi (referring to Buitrago) our goal is clear: a top five in the general classification is achievable. I believe in him. He has grown enormously in recent years and has prepared himself excellently both physically and mentally. We also want to try to win at least one stage, because with this lineup that is possible."
