Guillaume Martin has been around the professional peloton for quite a few years now. The 32-year-old Frenchman will start his eleventh pro season next year. During that time, he has witnessed the level in the peloton rise spectacularly," he told AFP.
When the conversation turns to the increased speed of the peloton, the word doping quickly comes up, although Martin says he has no reason to doubt it. "There may be suspicion, but what is that based on? The performances are undeniably impressive, but there are also many factors contributing to the professionalization of the sport," said the Frenchman, referring to improvements in nutrition and aerodynamics.
"Sometimes I post climbing times that match those of Lance Armstrong. That shows that with professional dedication you can reach a very high level. Of course, the gap between me and the riders who dominate the Tour de France is big, but I can't accuse anyone. I don't want to sound bitter. Maybe the riders at the top simply have more talent. That has very often been the case throughout the history of the sport," said Martin, who himself has finished twice in the Tour’s top 10.
Although the climber recognizes the importance of professionalization, he doesn’t want to take it too far. "Sometimes I want to focus more on enjoyment. At the same time, I find it interesting to learn more about my body and all the resources and people we have at our disposal. We often discuss equipment and nutrition. I keep learning new things. That satisfies me on an intellectual level," said the philosopher on the bike.
Concerns about young riders
Martin also sees the downside of professionalization. "Riders turn pro at an increasingly younger age. That causes problems. Young riders compare themselves to each other. Riders with a different development curve who can’t immediately keep up with the best can sometimes struggle with that. They also quit school earlier. Facing so much pressure at that age increases the risk of psychological issues," argues the former King of the Mountains in the Vuelta a España.
