Many uncertainties remain about the merger between Intermarché-Wanty and Lotto. It is still unclear whether Biniam Girmay will stay with the newly combined team. Intermarché-Wanty assumes that the Eritrean wants to stay, reports Het Laatste Nieuws, but according to the Flemish newspaper, Israel-Premier Tech is meanwhile courting his services.
Girmay still has an ongoing contract with Intermarché-Wanty until the end of 2028, but if the merged team continues under Lotto’s license (as expected), he has the right under UCI regulations to look elsewhere. He is currently linked to two teams: UAE Emirates XRG and Israel-Premier Tech. According to HLN, the latter team is closest to securing the Eritrean’s signature.
Girmay’s arrival could offset the potential departure of Derek Gee from Israel-Premier Tech. The Canadian announced earlier this week that he would be leaving Israel-Premier Tech, but the team wants to keep him under his current contract. Cycling journalist Daniel Benson previously reported that Gee has already signed a contract with INEOS Grenadiers starting in 2026.
Laurenz Rex
Besides Girmay, Laurenz Rex is also attracting interest, according to HLN. The 25-year-old classics rider is reportedly in talks with a major team, which can be ranked among the top five teams in terms of budget. It is unclear which team is involved.
