Luca Guercilena, the manager of Lidl-Trek, advocated for the use of airbags in the peloton in an interview with bici.pro. According to the Italian, crashes are inevitable and teams should do more to protect riders from them.
"Crashes will always happen. They are part of our sport," he says. "That’s why I would invest in technology to include an airbag in your helmet or your shirt, so you are better protected when you hit the ground during a crash."
Guercilena is also not a fan of setting limits on equipment. The Italian does not want to see restrictions on gearing either. "Speed is inherent to technological progress. If you limit something, people will find other ways around it to go faster," he concludes.
