The Vuelta a España last departed from the Netherlands in 2022, and it will be a while before the Spanish Grand Tour visits our country again. The province of Limburg has no plans to secure the start of the Vuelta in 2029 or 2030.
Earlier this year, the provincial government was approached by an "external party" about a possible Vuelta start. In response, the council decided to conduct a feasibility analysis to gain insight into the potential opportunities, risks, and challenges within the objectives of various policy frameworks.
After an extensive analysis, it was concluded that the financial and organizational risks for the Province is so significant that they outweigh the potential benefits the event could offer. The projected financial investments and the intended coverage—by both public and private parties—are deemed by the council to be unrealistic and unfeasible.
Limited economic impact
Moreover, a Vuelta start would yield relatively little economic benefit for Limburg compared to other cycling events such as the Amstel Gold Race. Additionally, the provincial government fears it would be overstrained in terms of capacity and expertise when hosting the Vuelta a España.
"Furthermore, both this analysis and our past experiences (Cycling World Championships 2012, ed.) show that the financial risks of deficits largely, if not entirely, rest with us as a province," Limburg province writes in a letter.
