Marlen Reusser escapes serious injury after heavy crash in UAE Tour: "I was lucky"

The second stage of the UAE Tour Women was not exactly one for the history books, but the race ended—unfortunately—with a major crash. One of the main victims was Marlen Reusser, but the Swiss rider miraculously escaped serious injury from her high-speed crash.

It seemed to be going well for a long time in the finale of the second stage, but just before entering the last kilometer, things went wrong and several riders, including Reusser, went down at high speed. “What an experience to race all day with an average of under 100 watts, then— with a peloton full of fresh legs—start the last five kilometers,” the Movistar leader reflected on Instagram about the stage.

“I saw no escape route when they fell in front of me. I performed an almost perfect somersault (just kidding) over a pile of riders and flying bikes. My helmet, bike (the frame is smashed), shoes, cycling kit… everything was destroyed. And I had ‘only’ a few scrapes.”

“Believe me, I’m smiling about the luck I had. I have to say: we. As far as I know, no one suffered serious injuries. This all happened at a speed of about sixty kilometers per hour.”

In other words, Reusser can start preparing soon for her next race on the cycling calendar. “Now I need to let my wounds heal until I can train again. My next goal: Strade Bianche.” This prestigious gravel classic will take place in a month (March 7).
