Missed chance for Remco Evenepoel? Times in Valencia time trial don’t count

The time differences in the time trial of the Tour of Valencia will not count towards the general classification. The organization announced this in a statement. The strong wind is causing safety concerns.

The first riders have already started their 17-kilometer race against the clock. However, they are all riding regular bikes. The time trial bikes remain in the stable, as it would not be safe to race the course with the time trial equipment. It has now also become clear that the times will not count towards the general classification. A stage winner will still be celebrated, and the original route will be maintained.

The organization states that the decision was made during a meeting on the safety protocol after a 'thorough analysis' of the conditions under which the time trial is being held.

Time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel seemed poised to make a significant move in the general classification during the time trial but now sees that opportunity slip away. The decision for the overall standings will likely be settled in Saturday’s queen stage. But for now, Biniam Girmay, who won Wednesday's opening stage, will keep the leader’s jersey.
