The second stage of the Tour of Denmark was won by Søren Wærenskjold. In Gladsaxe, the rider struck in a bunch sprint that was slightly uphill in the last few hundred meters. Steffen De Schuyteneer, Axel Zingle, Jasper Philipsen, and Nils Eekhoff were beaten.
The second stage of the PostNord Tour of Denmark covered only 110 kilometers. This was partly due to the transfer the riders had to make after Tuesday's stage. The race started for the first time in history on the island of Bornholm, which also brought logistical challenges.
The sprinters in this race, mainly Fabio Jakobsen and Jasper Philipsen, probably didn’t mind as they seemed to have a prime opportunity in the second stage to claim a win in the Danish stage race.
Strong Danes trouble the peloton; Wærenskjold wins
Still, a bunch sprint was no walk in the park on Wednesday. During the stage, a strong group of Danes got away, including strong rider Rasmus Bøgh Wallin, Matias Malmberg, Sebastian Nielsen, and Mads Andersen. As the stage progressed, the breakaway looked increasingly likely to succeed, with Malmberg and Bøgh Wallin—known in the Netherlands for his victory at the Arno Wallaard Memorial—holding on until the final kilometers.
Only two kilometers from the finish in Gladsaxe, their escape was over. At that point, it was certain that a sprint would decide the stage in Denmark. Uno-X and Lotto led out the final bend 800 meters from the line, after which Daniel Stampe launched the sprint. Nils Eekhoff quickly responded but was passed in the final 50 meters by Søren Wærenskjold, who secured his third win of the season.
Eekhoff ultimately finished fifth, as De Schuyteneer, Zingle, and Philipsen all managed to pass the Dutchman in the final meters. Mads Pedersen remains the leader of this race.
